Achieving Sustainable Livelihoods

For generations, we have provided resources and training for struggling small-scale farmers in order to give them a chance to change their circumstances. But solving hunger and poverty on a global scale requires focus on sound, community-based work aligned with a long-term commitment to achieving self-reliance.

How Are We Helping?

Each region of the world supports the people who live there in different ways. Recognizing this, we have developed our guiding principles, our 12 Cornerstones for Just and Sustainable Development, to serve as the foundation for community growth. By applying these fundamental values to each project, we are seeing significant strides in ending hunger and poverty every year.

The Southern Africa Goat Value Chain Program aims at improving food and income security among small-scale ruminant producers in southern Africa through integrated interventions that improve production, productivity and market access. The program will organize farmers into producers associations and build their capacity in cooperative management. It also will establish market infrastructures around which other services can be accessed.

The program will target 120,000 small-scale farming families in five provinces in the Mekong Delta to develop a strong foundation of social capital, improve their livelihoods, increase food security and improve nutritional practices and effectively integrate in the beef and dairy value chains. It is estimated that approximately 40 percent of the target population will be small-scale farmers at Level A and 60 percent at Level B. By 2023, all families will achieve self-reliance and resilience through their participation in the beef and dairy cow value chains.

For an indigenous farmer or artisan in the Andean region, alpaca, llama and vicuña production is vital to survival, but due to climate change, agriculture has new challenges. The PACHA program brings new sustainable farming models plus the critical component of reliable market access so that farmers and artisans have a market to sell their meats and other goods, moving these families from simply surviving to thriving.

Heifer's work in the United States involves building and reviving local food systems for farmers in one of the poorest regions in the United States. We help low resource, small-scale farmers build livestock businesses and local food value chains, which connects them to consistent and profitable markets. This program aims to increase incomes for local producers and improve the viability of their farms. It also spurs rural economic development by creating new employment opportunities and increasing the availability of nutritious, sustainably grown food in these regions. Our goal is to increase the average income of participating farmers by at least 30 percent in these areas, provided them with a living wage. The farmer-owned businesses established through this program will support farm families and rural communities beyond the project duration.
